In the extreme, Martian-like conditions of the Omani desert a team of pioneering men and women from 25 countries are paving the way for future manned missions to Mars. As they prepare for the Red Planet ic! berlin is there to shield their eyes from everything Earth’s atmosphere can throw at them.

This eyewear collection was conceptualised with the objective to complement the already durable material of stainless steel stereotypically used by ic! berlin, with the aim to create a more comfortable and tactile frame. This was achieved through an internally developed system of injecting rubber around a steel skeletal structure. This material hybrid system gave the designers freedom to play with colour and volume to create some attractive utilitarian spaced out sunglass styles.

The styles were handed to the Austrian Space Team who were based in an Oman desert practicing in Martian like conditions. They were briefed to wear the frames while carrying out their everyday activities. The photoshoot acted as a test for the product’s strength along with a unique opportunity to capture the frames in a surreal environment.
